Alejandro Garnacho's Spectacular Bicycle Kick Steals the Show as United Stun Everton
Emily Sparks
In a dazzling display of skill and finesse, Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho delivered a bicycle kick that outshone iconic goals by Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, securing an unexpected victory over Everton. The breathtaking strike, just 136 seconds into the game, not only silenced the disgruntled Goodison Park but also clinched the win, earning United three crucial points.
Garnacho‘s overhead kick drew comparisons to legendary moments in football history, including Gareth Bale‘s memorable goal against Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s iconic strike for Real Madrid against Juventus, and Wayne Rooney‘s sensational bicycle kick in the Manchester derby. The 19-year-old Argentine winger, celebrating with Ronaldo‘s trademark ‘Siu’ gesture, left a lasting impression with his spectacular goal.
Despite Everton’s buildup dominated by the 10-point deduction controversy, United emerged victorious. Marcus Rashford, converting from the penalty spot, and Anthony Martial, adding a third, further compounded Everton’s woes. Notably, 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, making his Premier League debut, played a pivotal role in United’s success.
The result carried significant weight in a week poised to be crucial for United—with a must-win Champions League tie against Galatasaray and Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s impending investment. Manager Erik Ten Hag‘s decision to start Mainoo, despite serving a touchline ban, showcased astute judgment and added depth to United’s squad.
Everton left ruing missed opportunities and failed to capitalize on a series of chances in the first half, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucouré, and Idrissa Gana Gueye all squandering golden opportunities. Martial‘s drawn penalty, initially booked as a dive, further compounded Everton’s frustrations. Rashford, opting to take the penalty over Bruno Fernandes, confidently converted to double United’s lead.
As Fernandes orchestrated a fine team move leading to Martial‘s goal, Everton’s hopes crumbled. Despite a late attempt from Vitalii Mykolenko to hit the crossbar, the home side couldn’t recover, and their fans had already streamed away long before the final whistle.
