Despite her parents’ divorce in 1979, Wintour maintained a strong connection to her maternal grandmother, Anna Baker.

Additionally, Audrey Slaughter played a significant role in her life as a stepmother and an influential figure in the magazine industry.

Anna Wintour grew up in a family of four siblings, including her late older brother Gerald, who tragically passed away in a traffic accident during their childhood.

One of her younger brothers, Patrick, shares her passion for journalism and currently holds the position of diplomatic editor at The Guardian.

Her other siblings, James and Nora, have pursued careers in London’s local government and international non-governmental organizations, showcasing their family’s diverse talents and interests.

Education

While at North London Collegiate School, Anna Wintour showed her rebellious spirit by consistently defying the school’s dress code, often by shortening the hemlines of her skirts. At the age of 14, she made the bold decision to cut her hair into a stylish bob.

Wintour’s passion for fashion blossomed from watching Cathy McGowan on Ready Steady Go! and reading Seventeen magazine, which her grandmother sent to her from the United States.

These early influences helped shape Wintour into the iconic figure she is today in the fashion industry.

Reflecting on her childhood in London during the 1960s, she vividly remembered the vibrant fashion scene that was impossible to ignore.

She recalled how her father, who worked in publishing, often sought her input on strategies to attract more young readers.

It was a time of innovation and creativity, and she felt privileged to witness the evolution of fashion and youth culture firsthand.

Career

Anna Wintour’s illustrious career in fashion journalism spans several decades, starting with her early days in London during the 1970s, where she contributed to publications like Harper’s & Queen.

Her experience led her across the pond to New York City in the late 1970s, where she worked for prestigious magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and New York Magazine.

Wintour’s editorial leadership skills shined when she became the editor of British Vogue in the mid-80s before returning to the US in 1987 to transform House & Garden into HG. This bold and controversial move showcased her innovative approach to magazine publishing.

Anna Wintour’s career has been nothing short of remarkable. From her early days in the fashion industry to becoming a cultural icon, she has left an indelible mark on the fashion world.

As the Global Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast and the influential editor-in-chief of Vogue, Wintour’s editorial decisions have significantly shaped the industry.

However, her focus on high fashion and the promotion of fur has not been without criticism, with some viewing her vision of beauty as elitist and unattainable.

Despite this, Wintour’s ambition and influence continue to make her a powerhouse in the ever-evolving fashion world.

At the tender age of 15, she began a brief relationship with the established novelist Piers Paul Read, who was nine years her senior.

As she navigated through her late teenage years, Wintour’s love life took another turn as she found herself in the company of gossip columnist Nigel Dempster.

This relationship blossomed into a prominent presence within the vibrant social scene of London’s club circuit.

In 1984, Anna Wintour married child psychiatrist David Shaffer, with whom she had two children: Charles, born in 1985, and Katherine, born in 1987. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce in 1999.

Charles graduated from the University of Oxford and the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Meanwhile, Katherine pursued a career in writing, contributing occasional columns for The Daily Telegraph in 2006 before graduating from Columbia University in 2009.

Despite her mother’s influence in the fashion industry, Katherine has made it clear that she has no intention of following in her footsteps.

In 2018, Katherine married Italian filmmaker Francesco Carrozzini, the son of Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia.

Newspapers and gossip columnists widely reported that Anna Wintour’s alleged affair with investor Shelby Bryan was the reason behind the end of her marriage to David Shaffer.

Despite the rumors, Wintour chose not to address the speculation. As quoted in the Observer, a former colleague mentioned that Bryan positively affected Wintour, stating that he “mellowed her,” and she has been seen smiling and laughing more.
