Early Life

On Christmas Day, 1954, Annie Lennox was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. She is the daughter of Thomas Allison Lennox (1925–1986) and Dorothy Farquharson (née Ferguson; 1930–2003).

Lennox was accepted to the Royal Academy of Music in London during the 1970s, where she spent three years studying the flute, piano, and harpsichord.

To supplement her income, she took on part-time employment while living on a student grant. While at the Royal Academy, Lennox was dissatisfied and questioned her ability compared to her fellow students.

She considered her options and considered going in a different direction. According to Lennox’s flute teacher’s final assessment, “Ann has been more dedicated lately, but she hasn’t always known where to focus her efforts.” But she is incredibly talented.”

Education

Annie Lennox’s musical education took a unique path, starting with her time at Harlaw Academy in Aberdeen.

She then continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she honed her skills in flute, piano, and harpsichord.

Despite leaving before completing her final exams, her early start in music—singing in a choir at age 6 and beginning piano lessons at age 7—shaped the strong musical foundation that would define her career. Her dedication to music from a young age was evident in her talent and passion for the art form.

During her time at the Royal Academy of Music, Annie Lennox had the opportunity to play and sing with various bands, such as Windsong, which allowed her to gain valuable experience in live performance.

Despite the theoretical knowledge and technical skills she acquired at RAM, Lennox felt disconnected from its “cultural aspect” and battled with self-doubt.

Career

Annie Lennox’s illustrious career has spanned over five decades, showcasing her versatility across multiple genres and earning her international acclaim.

In the late 1970s, Lennox first made a mark as the lead singer of the new wave band The Tourists, which gained moderate success in Europe.

However, it was in 1980 that Lennox truly soared to stardom after forming the synth-pop duo Eurythmics with Dave Stewart.

Eurythmics went on to achieve worldwide fame in the 1980s, releasing eight studio albums and producing a string of hit songs such as “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” “Here Comes the Rain Again,” and “Who’s That Girl?” Their music videos were particularly lauded for their groundbreaking visuals and captivating storytelling.

Annie Lennox has established herself as a successful and acclaimed artist with the release of eight solo studio albums, all of which have received both commercial success and critical acclaim.

Some of her most beloved songs as a solo artist include “Why,” “Walking on Broken Glass,” and “Little Bird.”

Beyond her music career, Lennox has used her platform to advocate for various social and political causes, such as HIV/AIDS awareness, women’s rights, and environmental protection.

She has founded multiple charities, including the SING campaign and The Circle, which work towards supporting women and girls in Africa.

In recognition of her contributions to music and charity work, Lennox was honored with the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2012.
