Personal Life

They were found guilty of treason and sentenced to 15 and four years imprisonment. Niehaus had incriminated himself and Lourens by unknowingly using a police-issued camera to photograph the intended target while traveling in a police vehicle.

They were also accused of recruiting fellow whites as agents for the ANC and helping four young blacks flee into exile.

Lourens and Niehaus got married in jail in 1986. They also earned degrees in theology through Unisa while incarcerated.

Lourens served her complete four-year sentence and was released in 1989. Niehaus served nearly eight years with other ANC political prisoners and was released in 1991. The couple divorced in 2002, and Niehaus married Linda Thango.

She and her fiancé, Carl Niehaus, were accused of being terrorists and traitors by the apartheid regime.
