She started breeding show cats at a young age and even used llamas for a unique lawn-mowing business.

Later on, she joined her husband, Don Lewis, in the real estate business in the 1990s. Together, they co-founded Wildlife on Easy Street, a big cat sanctuary near Tampa, in 1992. Stairs’ love for animals has led her down many paths and has significantly impacted the animal welfare world.

After realizing the harm it caused the animals, she decided to stop breeding them. In 1997, after the mysterious disappearance of her husband, Don Lewis, she renamed her sanctuary Big Cat Rescue and took on the CEO role.

She continues to run the refuge and care for over 200 rescued big cats, providing them with a safe and loving home.

Carole uses social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and her podcast “The Cat Chat” to promote extensive cat conservation and raise awareness about the dangers of private ownership of exotic animals.

She also actively campaigns for the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which aims to ban the private ownership of big cats in the US and protect their safety and well-being.

Through her online presence and advocacy efforts, Carole strives to positively impact the protection of big cats and their natural habitats.
