Her political career began in 2000 when Andrés Manuel López Obrador, then mayor of Mexico City, invited her to a meeting. She served as the Secretary of the Environment under his administration from 2000 to 2006. Later, she became a candidate for President of Mexico in the 2024 general election and is currently the President-elect of Mexico. A member of the left-wing political party Morena, she is set to assume the presidency on October 1, 2024.

From 2018 to 2023, Sheinbaum served as the mayor of Mexico City. During this time, she oversaw the introducing of the city’s Metrobus system and constructing a second story on the Periférico beltway. She also established scholarship programs for public school students, created two new universities, and invested in improving school campuses.

Claudia Sheinbaum‘s victory in the 2024 election is a significant milestone in Mexico’s political history. It marks the first time a woman and a person of Jewish descent have been elected to the presidency. This achievement is especially notable in a predominantly Catholic country with a deeply patriarchal culture.

Globally recognized for her expertise in energy and industry, Sheinbaum was invited to join the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the United Nations in 2007. She contributed to the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report on “Mitigation of Climate Change,” which earned the IPCC a Nobel Peace Prize that year. Claudia Sheinbaum‘s commitment to environmental issues was evident during her tenure as Mexico City’s Secretary of the Environment from 2000 to 2006. She implemented several initiatives to improve the city’s transportation infrastructure, including the electronic vehicle registration center and the Metrobús system. She also played a key role in constructing the second story of Anillo Periférico, a major ring road in Mexico City, significantly impacting the city’s development and sustainability.

She served as the mayor of Tlalpan until 2017 when she resigned to run for mayor of Mexico City with the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition, comprising Morena, the Labor Party (PT), and the Social Encounter Party (PES). Her resignation marked a strategic move to advance her political career, leading to her election as the first female head of government in Mexico City.

On June 12, 2023, Claudia Sheinbaum announced her resignation as head of government of Mexico City to focus on her presidential campaign for Juntos Hacemos Historia, which includes Morena, the Labor Party, and the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico. Her campaign officially started on March 1, 2024, at the Zócalo, where she outlined her proposals and pledged to continue the policies of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The election was held on June 2, 2024, and the INE’s quick count projected Sheinbaum as the winner, making her the virtual president-elect of Mexico.
