BBC Interview Video

Amid Britain’s visa crackdown on family members of international students, Emdee Tiamiyu stepped into the spotlight, unraveling a rising trend among Nigerians yearning for a fresh start overseas.

From the cozy confines of his living room, Emdee, known to his legion of subscribers as the go-to guy for scholarships, fellowships, and the elusive “japa-ships,” delves deep into the intricacies of migration and education.

“Japa,” derived from the Yoruba language, signifies an escape—a term echoing the sentiments of many Nigerians disillusioned by their homeland’s governance challenges.

“People are exploring alternatives,” Emdee explains. “They’re desperate to break free from Nigeria.”

Emdee Tiamiyu serves as a beacon of guidance in navigating immigration systems, particularly those in the UK, where the student route emerges as a prevalent path for aspiring migrants.

“The student route is like an answered prayer,” he remarks, highlighting its accessibility to the masses.

Last year, Nigerians secured a significant share of UK student visas, with a notable fraction allocated to accompanying family members. However, recent government measures aim to curtail visas for spouses and children of postgraduate students, a move aimed at curbing system abuse.

Emdee Tiamiyu acknowledges the need for action, as some exploit educational opportunities solely for immigration benefits. He underscores the importance of genuine intent among students, which is essential for upholding the integrity of educational institutions.

Despite stringent regulations, the allure of a UK education remains potent, promising economic opportunities and personal growth. Students like Rotimi Lawal, pursuing advanced degrees in mechanical engineering, see education as a gateway to a brighter future.

Yet, Emdee warns of potential consequences, urging policymakers to consider the broader impact on universities and migrants alike. He emphasizes the necessity of legal pathways for migration, given the desperation of those seeking a better life abroad.

Emdee confronts the harsh realities of migration on his YouTube platform, exposing the lengths individuals would go to for a chance at a new beginning, even if it means taking risky and illegal routes.
