Early Life & Education

Tindyebwa Agaba Wise was born in Rwanda in the late 1980s. He belonged to the Tutsi ethnic group, which the Hutu extremists targeted during the Rwandan genocide of 1994.

He lost his father to AIDS when he was six years old, and his mother and sisters disappeared when they fled from their village. He was then abducted by soldiers and forced to become a child soldier. He witnessed and experienced unspeakable atrocities that traumatized him for life.

He was rescued by a Care International worker who helped him get out of Rwanda. He went to Uganda and lived in a refugee camp for two years. Then he flew to England with a fake passport.

He arrived in London in 1999 when he was 11 years old. He had no legal status and no family. He lived on the streets and in hostels, surviving on scraps and charity. He also faced racism and discrimination from some people who did not welcome him.

He met Emma Thompson in 2003 when he was 16 years old. She was a patron of the Refugee Council and invited him to spend Christmas with her family. Initially hesitant, he gradually opened up to her and her husband, Greg Wise.

They offered him a home, a family, and a chance to start over. They officially adopted him in the same year and gave him their surname.

He studied politics and sociology at the City and Islington College. He also learned English and French. He then went to the University of Exeter, graduating with a degree in politics and international relations.

He also became involved in various student societies and campaigns, such as Amnesty International and Oxfam.
