He was the youngest of four sons of Gennady Golovkin Sr., a Russian coal miner, and Elizaveta Golovkina, a Korean chemical lab assistant.

He grew up in a poor and tough neighbourhood, where he learned to fight early on.

His older brothers, Sergey and Vadim, introduced him to boxing when he was eight, often making him spar with older and bigger boys.

Sadly, both of his brothers died while serving in the Soviet Army, leaving a deep impact on Golovkin’s life.

He later moved to Kostanay with his mother and twin brother Maxim, where he continued his boxing training.

He attended a sports and boarding school, where he excelled in academics and athletics. He graduated from the Karaganda State University with a physical education and sports degree.

He also studied at the Olympic Reserve School in Almaty, where he met his future coach, Abel Sanchez.

Personal Life

Gennady Golovkin is married to Alina Golovkina, a former Kazakhstan model whom he met in 2000.

They tied the knot in 2007 and have two children: a son named Vadim, born in 2009, and a daughter, whose name is not publicly known, born in 2015. Golovkin is very protective of his family’s privacy and rarely shares any details about them in the media.

He is a devoted father and husband and often dedicates his victories to his wife and children. He also supports various charities and causes, such as the Smile Train, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and the World Boxing Council’s Clean Boxing Program. He is a devout Orthodox Christian and wears a cross around his neck.

He also won gold medals at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, and the 2004 Asian Championships in Puerto Princesa, Philippines.

He turned professional in 2006 and signed with the German promoter Universum Box-Promotion. He debuted on May 6, 2006, knocking out Gabor Balogh in the first round.

He won his first major world title, the WBA interim middleweight title, on August 14, 2010, by stopping Milton Nunez in the first round.

He was later elevated to the WBA (Super) champion and defended his title 14 times, with 13 knockouts. He also unified the WBC, IBF, and IBO titles by defeating Marco Antonio Rubio, David Lemieux, and Daniel Jacobs.

He became the undisputed middleweight champion in 2017 when he defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by a controversial split decision in one of the most anticipated fights of the decade.

However, in another controversial and close fight, he lost his title in a rematch with Alvarez in 2018 by a narrow majority decision.

He bounced back from his first professional loss by knocking out Steve Rolls in 2019 and regaining the IBF and IBO titles by beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in the same year.

He defended his titles against Kamil Szeremeta in 2020, breaking the record for the most title defences in the middleweight division with 21.

Controversy

Gennady Golovkin has been involved in some controversy, most notably his two fights with Canelo Alvarez, which ended in a disputed draw and a controversial loss for Golovkin, respectively.

Many fans and experts criticized the judging, especially the scorecard of Adalaide Byrd, who favoured Alvarez 118-110 in the first fight.

Golovkin and his team accused Alvarez of being a cheater after he tested positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance, before their scheduled rematch in 2018.

Alvarez claimed that he had eaten contaminated meat in Mexico and was suspended for six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The rematch was postponed until September 2018, when Alvarez won by a majority decision in a fight that many observers felt could have gone either way.

Golovkin and his supporters felt he was robbed of his titles and demanded a third fight, which has not yet materialised.
