In a shocking turn of events, former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted for the murder of George Floyd, was reportedly stabbed over 20 times by a fellow inmate in an Arizona prison. The assailant, identified as John Turscak, allegedly orchestrated the attack on the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, intending to reference the Black Lives Matter movement.

Chauvin, infamous for the death of George Floyd, faced a brutal assault in the prison’s law library. Turscak admitted that his actions were an attempt to align with the Black Lives Matter cause, expressing the sentiment that he would have killed Chauvin if authorities hadn’t intervened swiftly.

The U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Tucson has now charged Turscak with attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The victim referred to as D.C., sustained approximately 22 stab wounds with an improvised knife.

While the charges against Turscak could lead to a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, there is currently no detailed information about Chauvin‘s condition following the attack.

Derek Chauvin was previously found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in 2021, resulting in a sentence of 22-and-a-half years behind bars. The incident that sparked widespread protests against racial injustice revealed a stark contrast to the initial police account, prompting a Justice Department probe into the Minneapolis police.

The findings of the investigation, released in June 2023, exposed systemic issues within the department, including a pattern of violent and racist practices. Furthermore, the city of Minneapolis settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the Floyd family, agreeing to a $27 million payout.

Chauvin‘s recent assault comes amidst an unsuccessful appeal of his second-degree murder conviction, adding another layer to the complex aftermath of George Floyd‘s tragic death.
