Controversy

Chandra Sri Ram has been involved in some legal controversies related to her husband’s career and cases.

In 1995, she sued the International School of Kuala Lumpur for dropping her 17-year-old son, Govind, from the school debating team and sought a whopping sum of RM6 million as damages.

Both parties settled the case, but it attracted much criticism internationally from Amnesty International and journalist groups for being an attempt to curtail freedom of expression.

Even the then US President, Bill Clinton, wrote a protest letter to the Prime Minister when the journalist who wrote a critical article of the incident, Murray Hiebert, was imprisoned for contempt of court.

Hiebert was the first journalist to be sent to jail in Malaysia for contempt of court for his article and the first journalist in a Commonwealth country in 50 years.

It was alleged that the main reason this case was brought to court was that Chandra was slighted because the article portrayed her as a “petty, vindictive woman.”

In 2014, Chandra was accused of trying to extort RM10 million from a senior IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh, Sachin Sinha, and his family. Sinha, the higher education commissioner, complained to the Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM), Chennai, a spiritual organization that Chandra was associated with, for harassing him and his family and demanding money from them.

Sinha claimed that he and his family were followers of SRCM, but they decided to leave the organization after discovering some irregularities and illegal activities.

He alleged that Chandra and some other functionaries of SRCM threatened him and his family with dire consequences if they did not pay them RM10 million.

He also alleged that Chandra tried influencing him to favor SRCM in some official matters. The functionaries of SRCM denied the allegations and claimed that Sinha was trying to defame the organization.
