Early Life & Education

Headie One, born Irving Ampofo Adjei, is a British rapper from Tottenham, London. He was born on the 6th of October in 1994 and grew up in the Broadwater Farm housing estate. His African roots run deep as he was born to Ghanaian parents and is proficient in speaking the Ghanaian language of “Twi.”

Tragically, Headie One lost his mother, Edna Duah, when he was just three years old, and as a result, his father took on the responsibility of raising him. While he has not revealed any information about his sister, it is known that he has one. The rapper has not disclosed any details about his educational background either.

Headie One was a big soccer fan as a young boy and played for his local team, Haringey Borough F.C. However, his sports dreams were halted after an ankle injury. That was when he turned his focus toward his passion for rap. He started writing music in his early teens and honed his skills after being released from prison.

The artist’s stage name, “Headie One,” is a nod to his childhood nickname, which he received due to his head’s resemblance to a 50p coin.

Personal Life

Headie One is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to his romantic involvements. Despite his burgeoning fame, the rapper has kept his love life out of the public eye. He is not married.

However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Headie One, as he has faced his fair share of legal troubles. In his teenage years, he found himself behind bars on multiple occasions, with charges relating to selling hard drugs like cocaine and heroin.

One of Headie One‘s most recent legal entanglements occurred on January 8, 2020, when he was sentenced to six months in prison for possessing a knife. This marked his fourth stint in jail, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by his legions of fans.

But despite these setbacks, Headie One has managed to stay focused on his music career and has emerged stronger than ever before. After being released early in April 2020, he wasted no time returning to work, producing hit after hit and cementing his position as one of the UK’s most exciting young artists.

Career

In the early 2010s, Headie One was already on his way to becoming a household name in the British rap scene. He began making a name for himself with his music, using the moniker “Headz.” At the time, he was also a member of Star Gang, a group of talented rappers from Tottenham.

One of his closest collaborators then was another Tottenham rapper, RV. They co-released the mixtapes Sticks & Stones and Drillers x Trappers in 2016. It was clear that they had a special musical chemistry, and the projects were warmly received by fans.

In February 2018, Headie One dropped his third solo mixtape, The One. The mixtape included the infectious hit song Know Better, featuring RV. The song quickly became a global sensation and catapulted him into mainstream success. Later that same year, he was featured on the Belly Squad track Missing, which peaked at number 84 on the UK Singles Chart.

The following month, in June 2018, Headie One dropped his fourth mixtape, The One Two. The project debuted on the UK Albums Chart at number 32, a huge milestone for the rapper. He even embarked on his first national tour later that year in November.

It was only a short time before he broke records left and right. His single 18Hunna, featuring Dave, debuted at an impressive number six on the UK chart in January 2019, making him the highest charting drill artist before Russ Millions and Tion Wayne‘s Body.

His sixth mixtape, Drillers x Trappers II, which he created with RV, was released in March 2019 and charted at number 21 in the United Kingdom. The mixtape’s first single, Match Day, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, landing at number 86.

In July of that year, Headie One collaborated with Krept & Konan on their single I Spy, which peaked at number 18.

And finally, in October 2020, Headie One‘s debut album, Edna, was released to critical acclaim. The album, which was dedicated to his late mother, soared to the top of the UK charts, cementing his place in British music history.

Controversy

In January 2018, Headie One was allegedly ambushed by rivals while he was at the University of Bedfordshire. He responded to the attack with a fiery diss track titled Know Better. The brutal attack was filmed, then uploaded to social media platforms such as Snapchat and YouTube, leading to an “all-out gang war.”

In March 2018, the Metropolitan Police shut down Headie One‘s concert that was scheduled to take place at the Barbican Centre. The police had previously “singled out” his music, linking it to London’s growing knife crime issue.

In an April interview, the rapper candidly spoke about the negative perception of the drill music scene, stating that “only a fool” would attribute the capital’s violence problem solely to the genre.

Net Worth

Headie One‘s net worth is estimated at an eye-popping sum of $7 million. This net worth was estimated based on his asset, album sales, and endorsement deals.
