Nigeria’s delegation to the Climate Summit in Dubai has sparked controversy as notable figures, including Toke Makinwa and IBD Dende, find themselves at the center of public scrutiny. The list of delegates, curated by political figure Seyi Tinubu, has raised eyebrows and ignited conversations about the appropriateness of certain individuals representing the nation at a climate-focused event.

Toke Makinwa, a well-known media personality and social media influencer, has drawn attention not for her environmental expertise but for her inclusion in the delegate list. Critics argue that her presence raises questions about the selection process, emphasizing the need for delegates with a background in climate-related issues.

IBD Dende, a figure previously arrested for smuggling, has also found his way onto the list. This has led to further criticism, with many questioning the criteria used to determine the delegation and the appropriateness of including individuals with legal question marks.

The controversy doesn’t end there, as Seyi Tinubu and Hakeem Tinubu, also known as Hakeem Muri-Okunola, both with ties to political circles, are also part of the delegation. The public is expressing concerns about the qualifications of the delegates and whether the selection process prioritized merit over political affiliations.

Twitter reactions have poured in, with users expressing disbelief and frustration at the perceived misuse of taxpayers’ money. Including individuals like IBD Dende, who faced legal troubles, raises questions about the credibility of Nigeria’s representation at the summit.

The accusations of sending individuals without expertise in climate-related matters have called for transparency in the selection process. Self-sponsored attendance might be a better approach, preventing taxpayers’ money from being used to fund questionable delegations.

Despite the negative reactions, the full details of the delegation and the selection process are yet to be officially disclosed. As Nigerians await an official press release, the controversy surrounding Toke Makinwa, IBD Dende, and others on the list continues to dominate social media discussions.

The unfolding situation raises broader questions about the transparency of political decisions and the importance of ensuring that delegates to international events genuinely contribute to the discussions at hand. Nigeria’s reputation in the global climate arena hangs in the balance as the controversy unfolds.
