Memphis, TN – After serving a 25-game suspension, Ja Morant marked his highly anticipated season debut against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. The Memphis Grizzlies’ star made an emphatic return, sealing the game with a jaw-dropping buzzer-beater that caught the attention of NBA heavyweights like LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Tyrese Maxey.
The Grizzlies, who struggled with a 6-19 record in Morant‘s absence, secured a 115-113 victory in their first game back with their star player. Morant‘s impact was immediate, turning the tide with a stellar 35-point, 8-assist, and 6-rebound performance.
After the win, Morant expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m a dog. I been putting work in, man. I ain’t play a game in eight months. I had a lot of time to learn myself, a lot of hard days where I went through it, but basketball is my life and what I love, and I’m excited to be back.”
Despite a challenging start, with Memphis leading 25-21 in the first quarter, the Pelicans staged a remarkable comeback, outscoring the Grizzlies 39-16 in the second quarter. The Pelicans held a 24-point lead, their largest of the season, but Morant‘s resilience became evident as he contributed to 22 of the Grizzlies’ 36 points in the third quarter.
In a thrilling finish, Morant showcased his clutch performance with three go-ahead field goals in the last 90 seconds of the game, a feat shared only with Luka Dončić over the past 25 years.
Reflecting on the game-winning moment, Morant revealed, “I called 12. I really didn’t want Coach to call the timeout. I told him that [was] the play I wanted to run right there. They believe in me. … I had to deliver for them.”
NBA peers, including LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Tyrese Maxey, took to social media to welcome Morant back, acknowledging the significance of his return to the court. Morant‘s triumphant comeback has undoubtedly injected fresh energy into the Grizzlies, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
