Personal Life

Dean has been married twice in his life. He first married Karla Ann Hennings on February 4, 1962, and they had a son named John Wesley Dean IV before divorcing in 1970.

Dean then married Maureen “Mo” Kane on October 13, 1972, and they have been together ever since.

Career

After completing his education, Dean joined the law firm Welch & Morgan in Washington, D.C.

However, he was fired due to alleged conflict of interest violations. In 1966, he served as the chief minority counsel to the Republicans on the United States House Committee on the Judiciary.

He later became the associate director of the National Commission on Reform of Federal Criminal Laws. Dean’s career took a significant turn when he volunteered to write position papers on crime for Richard Nixon’s presidential campaign 1968.

This led to his appointment as associate deputy in the office of the United States Attorney General in 1969. In 1970, Dean accepted the position of White House Counsel, replacing Chuck Colson. It was during his time in this role that the Watergate scandal unfolded.

Watergate Scandal

The Watergate scandal began with a meeting in January 1972 between Dean, Jeb Magruder, and John Mitchell, discussing a plan for intelligence-gathering operations during Nixon’s re-election campaign.

Dean’s involvement in covering up the subsequent break-ins at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters led to his central role in the scandal.

He took custody of evidence and money from the burglaries and destroyed some of it before investigators could find it.

Dean’s guilty plea to obstruction of justice and his subsequent cooperation with prosecutors became crucial in exposing the extent of the cover-up.

He testified before the Senate Watergate Committee, implicating administration officials, including Nixon. Dean’s testimony, combined with the discovery of Nixon’s secret White House tape recordings, ultimately led to the resignation of Nixon and the conviction of several key figures in the scandal.
