Early Life

On July 24, 1970, Julia Bradbury was born in Dublin, Ireland. Bradbury was born in the Republic of Ireland to Michael Bradbury, a marketing director in the steel and engineering sectors from Derbyshire, and his Greek mother. Her family eventually returned to the UK, where she was raised in an old rectory. She went to Edith Weston Primary School before transferring to King Edward VII School in Sheffield, where her mother had a clothing store, and her father worked for British Steel Corporation. When Joanne Whalley and Paula Wilcox’s Peter Pan was being produced at the Crucible Theatre, Bradbury, who had studied acting, took the stage.

Career

Bradbury began her television career as a presenter for Chrysalis TV, then L!VE TV, before transitioning from cable to terrestrial with GMTV as its Los Angeles reporter in 1996. Bradbury was also a Top Gear co-host in the 1990s.

On March 30, 1997, with a countdown from the Spice Girls, Bradbury and Tim Vine became the channel’s inaugural presenters. Are We Being Served? was a six-part television series that BBC Bradbury and co-host Arkin Salih hosted to examine customer service in the UK.

Later, comedian Lee Mack slammed the broadcast, calling it “the evilest program ever made” during an appearance on TV Heaven, Telly Hell. Bradbury hosted four episodes of Kill It, Cook It, Eat It on BBC Three from 2008 to 2011. The first series focused on farm animals such as chickens, pigs, sheep, and cattle. Ducks, bunnies, deer, and grouse were featured in the second series. The third series focused on fast food, with six people hunting, cooking, and eating animals. The fourth series focused on how the first series’ animal products are used outside the meat sector. As body parts were transferred from butcher to shop display, Bradbury was joined by teenage consumers to discover the animal origins of many of Western society’s favorite goods. Bradbury stood down from BBC One’s Watchdog on March 2, 2009, following reports in the press about inconsistencies in her Virgin Atlantic frequent flyer account. Anita Rani took over as co-host of the show with Nicky Campbell. Bradbury was acquitted of any misconduct in the probe on April 15, 2009, and it was confirmed that she would return to show Watchdog on April 20, 2009.

At the time, reports in the media said that Bradbury had to return £20,000 worth of Air Miles; however, her account and several others had been compromised by an employee who was ultimately detained and charged. Bradbury was confirmed as the new host of the revamped primetime Countryfile with Matt Baker in April 2009. After an eight-year sabbatical, Anne Robinson returned to Watchdog. On BBC One in August 2007, Bradbury co-hosted Ultimate Britain – Climbing with rock climber Tim Emmett. Bradbury’s lifelong dream of becoming a “real” rock climber was realized when the pair successfully climbed Cornwall’s Commando Ridge, Crackstone Rib in the Llanberis Pass, and the Old Man of Stoer. Bradbury also hosted Wainwright Walks on BBC Four that year, following the mountain trails of famed fell walker and guidebook author Alfred Wainwright. The show was then rebroadcast on BBC Two and lasted two seasons. Her roles in this and the Railway Walks series earned her the “Walking Man’s Totty.” Coast to Coast premiered on BBC Two on July 20, 2009.

Julia Bradbury’s German Wanderlust, a walking-themed series on BBC Four in December 2010, investigated Germany and its Romantic movement through treks nationwide. In January and February of 2011, the series was rerun on BBC Two. Canal Walks with Julia Bradbury premiered in May 2011. Julia Bradbury’s Icelandic Walk, another walking show, aired on May 11, 2011 on BBC Four. Her goal was to walk 60 kilometers of Iceland’s most famous hiking trail, which contains the world’s newest hills. This route concludes with Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano whose massive outbursts of volcanic ash halted air traffic across Europe in April 2010. In May 2011, she also debuted a new series exploring the paths of some of the UK’s canals. Bradbury hosted a series called That’s Britain! From November to December 2011, Nick Knowles focused on the good, the bad, and the ugly in Britain. In February 2012, she co-hosted the four-part BBC One documentary series The Great British Countryside, which debuted. In 2012, she co-hosted Planet Earth Live, a BBC One program about the wildlife of various countries, with Richard Hammond. Along with Adrian Simpson and Matt Allwright, Bradbury co-hosted the BBC One shows Fightback Britain and Keeping Britain Safe 24/7 in 2013.

Bradbury revealed on March 3, 2014, that he would leave Countryfile and the BBC entirely later that year before joining ITV full-time after performing odd gigs for them. She appeared in the third season of Sport Relief’s Famous, Rich, and Homeless program in 2006.
