Early Life, Career & Education

Katya Petrovna Zamolodchikova, a beloved contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race and one of America’s most influential drag queens, has captivated audiences with her unparalleled creativity, resourcefulness, and determination. Born on May 1, 1982, Katya, a Taurus, hails from Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA, and comes from an Irish background. Growing up in a devout Catholic household, she developed a passion for the art of drag, which ultimately propelled her to stardom.

Katya attended Marlborough High School and began her college education at Boston University. However, after a year, she transferred to the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she pursued a degree in video and performance art at the renowned Studio for Interrelated Media. While at MCAD, she discovered her love for drag and created her Russian-inspired drag persona.

Drawing inspiration from her favorite gymnast, Elena Zamolodchikova, as well as comedic talents like Tracy Ullman, Maria Bamford, Lana del Rey, and Amy Sedaris, Katya crafted her stage name: Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, or simply, Katya. Her fluency in Russian and her unwavering dedication to perfecting the accent, aided by resources like “Pronounce It Perfectly,” added authenticity to her character.

Katya’s early experiences performing in local drag shows in Boston and at the Jacques Cabaret instilled her confidence to audition for RuPaul’s Drag Race. Despite facing rejection three times, she persisted and eventually made it onto the seventh season of the show, where she was adored by fans and crowned “Miss Congeniality.”

In 2016, Katya returned to the RuPaul franchise for the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars, where she demonstrated her incredible talent once again, finishing as a runner-up. Since her breakthrough on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Katya has engaged in numerous collaborative projects across various digital platforms, particularly with fellow drag queen Trixie Mattel.
