Despite becoming a single mother at 17, Lidia persevered and became a prominent societal figure.
Career
Lidia Thorpe‘s journey into politics began when she was elected to the Victorian Aboriginal Consultative Committee in 2004. For six years, she tirelessly fought for Aboriginal people’s rights. Then, in 2010, she joined the Victorian Greens and became their spokesperson on crucial issues like Aboriginal affairs, mental health, consumer affairs, and sport.
A major milestone came in 2017 when Lidia won the Northcote seat in the Victorian Legislative Assembly, making her the first Aboriginal woman to do so. She remained a strong voice for important causes throughout her time there, earning respect and influence in the political arena.
In 2020, Lidia Thorpe took on an even bigger role as Victoria’s first Aboriginal senator, filling the seat left by Richard Di Natale‘s resignation. She remained a prominent figure within the Greens, advocating for First Nations communities, justice, and sport.
However, in early 2023, Lidia parted ways with the Greens over disagreements about the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament. She believed it wouldn’t truly represent Aboriginal people and feared it could harm native title rights. Despite leaving the party, Lidia is an independent senator, representing Victoria with passion and dedication.
Known for her outspoken support of Aboriginal rights, Lidia Thorpe doesn’t hold back in criticizing the government’s treatment of Indigenous Australians. She’s a strong advocate for a treaty between the government and Aboriginal communities and pushes for creating an autonomous Aboriginal nation, stressing the importance of Black sovereignty.
