Early Life & Education
Lil Peep, a celebrated rapper, was born on November 1, 1996, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, United States. Although he was born in Pennsylvania, his upbringing primarily occurred in Long Beach, New York.
His mother, Liza Womack, dedicated herself to teaching first grade, while his father, Karl Johan Åhr, made his mark as a notable Harvard professor. Alongside them, Lil Peep had a brother named Karl Ahr. He attended Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, New York, for his education.
Career
During his teenage years, Lil Peep identified himself as a solitary figure, often finding companionship through online connections. Immersed in the sounds of underground bands like SesHolloWaterBoyz and iLoveMakonnen, he began recording music while residing on Long Island, adopting the alias “Trap Goose.” He briefly shared a residence with childhood friend Brennan Savage until both relocated to Los Angeles.
Lil Peep‘s musical style has been described as lo-fi rap, earning him titles like “emo-trap heartthrob” and “emo rapper.” Many critics drew parallels between Lil Peep and the iconic singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain.
Jon Caramanica of The New York Times likened him to the “Kurt Cobain of lo-fi rap,” praising his melancholic yet melodically haunting compositions. Lil Peep embraced this comparison, wanting to embody the spirit of “the New Kurt Cobain” in his music and persona. According to Angus Harrison of The Guardian, Lil Peep skillfully repurposed Cobain‘s legacy for a generation more familiar with rap than guitars.
In 2015, Lil Peep released his debut extended play, Feelz, followed by his first mixtape, Lil Peep: Part One, which garnered 4,000 plays within its initial week. He then dropped the sequel mixtape, Live Forever. His close associates noted that “Feelz” bore a resemblance to the work of Dylan Ross, an artist whom Lil Peep admired and drew inspiration from.
