Twi Name
In Twi, the local name for chia seeds is Nkitinkiti. Interestingly, this term is also used for fennel seeds, which have culinary and medicinal uses.
Fennel seeds, derived from the Foeniculum vulgare plant of the carrot family, are indigenous to the Mediterranean region and have a history spanning thousands of years.
Known for their sweet, licorice-like flavor, fennel seeds are believed to aid in digestion, alleviate bloating, address coughs, and manage menstrual problems.
While chia and fennel seeds are distinct, they share the same name, Nkitinkiti, in Twi, adding an intriguing layer to their local identification.
