Early Life & Education

Lucy Letby, who turned 33 in 2023, was born on 4 January 1990 in Hereford, Herefordshire.

She was the only child of John and Susan Letby, both teachers. She grew up in a middle-class family in a semi-detached house in the city.

She attended St James’ Church of England Primary School and then the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School, where she was a bright and quiet student.

She was interested in science and biology and had a passion for animals. She had a pet rabbit named Flopsy and volunteered at a local animal shelter.

She decided to pursue a career in nursing and enrolled at the University of Chester in 2008. She studied nursing for three years and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 2011. She also completed a postgraduate course in neonatal intensive care in 2013.

She worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit from 2011 to 2016, where she cared for premature and sick babies.

She also had placements at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital, where two infants died during her training.

Personal Life

Lucy Letby was single and had no children of her own. She lived alone in a rented flat in Blacon, a suburb of Chester.

Her neighbours and colleagues described her as a friendly and helpful person who often smiled and chatted with them.

She enjoys travelling, cycling, and hiking and has visited several European and Asian countries. She also liked reading, watching movies, and listening to music. She was a fan of Harry Potter and Disney films.

She had a few close friends, mostly fellow nurses or former classmates. She kept in touch with them through social media and phone calls. She also had a few romantic relationships, but none lasted long.

Career

Both achievements and atrocities marked Lucy Letby’s career as a neonatal nurse. Her superiors and peers praised her for her skills and dedication. She was involved in several research projects and publications related to neonatal care.

She also participated in fundraising events and charity runs for the hospital. She was regarded as a trusted and respected staff member with a good rapport with the parents and families of the babies she looked after.

However, behind her professional facade, she was also a cold-blooded killer who deliberately harmed and killed the babies under her care.

She used various methods to inflict pain and death on the infants, such as injecting them with air or insulin, overfeeding them, and physically abusing them with medical tools.

She also removed confidential nursing handover sheets from her workplace and falsified patient records to avert suspicion.

She targeted babies who were vulnerable and fragile and who had no chance of fighting back or telling anyone what she did to them.

Her crimes were discovered after a high number of infant deaths and near-fatal collapses at the neonatal unit raised suspicion.

Statistical analysis revealed that the mortality rate at the unit was significantly higher than the national average and that most incidents occurred when Letby was on duty.

She was arrested for the first time in July 2018 and twice more before being charged in November 2020.

She was accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others between June 2015 and June 2016.

Controversy

Lucy Letby’s case has caused much controversy and outrage, both in the UK and worldwide. She has been condemned as a monster, a psychopath, and a sadist who betrayed her oath and profession.

She has also been compared to other notorious serial killers, such as Harold Shipman, Beverley Allitt, and Angel of Death.

Her case has raised questions about the safety and quality of neonatal care, the screening and supervision of nurses, and the detection and prevention of medical crimes.

The British government has commissioned an independent statutory inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the murders.

The inquiry will examine the actions and decisions of the Countess of Chester Hospital, the police, the coroner, and other relevant authorities.

The inquiry will also make recommendations to improve the protection and welfare of babies and their families. The inquiry is expected to take several years to complete.

The management of the Countess of Chester Hospital has also been criticised for ignoring warnings about Letby that could have prevented some of the killings.

It was revealed that some of her colleagues had raised concerns about her behaviour and performance, but they were dismissed or silenced.

It was also revealed that the hospital had failed to report some of the deaths and incidents to the authorities and had delayed launching an internal investigation.

The hospital has apologised to the victim’s parents and families and promised to cooperate with the inquiry and implement changes.
