He grew up in Burien, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. He attended Shorewood Elementary School, where he met Mary Kay Letourneau, his second-grade teacher, in 1991.

In 1996, he became her sixth-grade student when their sexual relationship began. Fualaau was a talented artist, and Letourneau encouraged him to develop his skills.

He also befriended Letourneau’s oldest son, Steve, and spent time at her house. Fualaau dropped out of high school after he fathered two children with Letourneau. He later earned his GED and took some college courses.

Personal Life

Vili Fualaau’s personal life has been marked by his controversial relationship with Mary Kay Letourneau, his teacher, and his wife.

They first had sex in June 1996, when he was 12 and she was 34. The police caught them in a van in February 1997, and Letourneau was arrested for child rape.

She gave birth to their first daughter, Audrey, in May 1997. She was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to have no contact with Fualaau for life. However, she violated the order and resumed their affair, resulting in a second pregnancy.

She gave birth to their second daughter, Georgia, in October 1998 while serving a seven-year sentence.

Fualaau’s mother, Soona, took custody of the two girls and sued the school district and the police for failing to protect her son from Letourneau. She received a $3 million settlement in 2002.

Fualaau remained loyal to Letourneau throughout her incarceration and petitioned the court to lift the no-contact order when he turned 18.

The order was revoked in 2004, and Fualaau and Letourneau married in 2005. They lived in Seattle and raised their two daughters, who knew their parents’ history.

They hosted “Hot for Teacher” nights at local clubs and appeared in interviews and documentaries. Fualaau filed for legal separation in 2017, citing irreconcilable differences.

He later withdrew the petition, but they eventually divorced in 2019. They remained friends and co-parents until Letourneau died of colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 58. Fualaau was by her side during her final moments.

In 2022, Fualaau welcomed his third child, a daughter named Sophia, from another relationship. He did not reveal the identity of the mother. In January 2024, he became a grandfather when his eldest daughter, Audrey, gave birth to a son.
