Cleveland, OH — In a poignant display of the human side of professional athletes, Cleveland Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett almost missed the crucial game against the New York Jets due to a recent family tragedy. Despite the Browns securing a playoff berth with a victory that night, Garrett struggled to fully celebrate with his teammates.

Garrett‘s uncle had tragically passed away on Christmas night, casting a shadow over the holiday season and the team’s momentous achievement. The star defensive end revealed that he had considered sitting out the game, leaving the decision in the hands of his grieving mother.

Speaking about the emotional turmoil, Garrett stated, “I love this team, I love the Browns, but I only got one mom. Hopefully, I will have many more games and ars, but there was only one CJ, and there’s only one mom. I would always be there for her if she needed me, just like she is for me.”

Despite the personal grief weighing heavily on him, Garrett chose to suit up for the game and played a pivotal role in the Browns’ victory, contributing three tackles and securing his first sack in five games. His exceptional performance throughout the season has propelled the franchise to the playoffs for the second time in four years.

The heartfelt story sheds light on professional athletes’ challenges, emphasizing that they are human with emotions, families, and personal struggles. In an unusual move, Garrett used the postgame press conference to share his grief, explaining, “I think getting it off my chest is kind of like the best medicine.” He clarified that the disclosure was also intended to reassure his teammates of his commitment despite the emotional toll.

The tight-knit camaraderie within the Browns team is evident, with Myles Garrett not wanting his teammates to misinterpret his emotions. As the franchise heads to the playoffs, Garrett‘s resilience in the face of personal tragedy serves as a testament to the strength and unity of the Browns team.
