Early Life & Education

His father worked as a taxi driver and a builder, and his mother was a part-time cleaner. He has a younger brother, Nicky, who is also a musician.

Weller was originally named John William Weller, but his parents changed his name to Paul when he was a baby.

He started his education at Maybury County First School in 1963, where he developed a love of music, especially the Beatles, the Who, and the Small Faces.

He learned to play the guitar when he was 11 and moved to Sheerwater County Secondary School, where he met his future bandmates.

He became interested in the 1960s mod culture, riding a Lambretta scooter, wearing mohair suits, and playing Rickenbacker guitars.

He formed the first version of the Jam in 1972, with his best friends Steve Brookes (lead guitar) and Dave Waller (rhythm guitar), and later joined by Rick Buckler (drums) and Bruce Foxton (bass).

Weller’s father acted as their manager and booked gigs at local working men’s clubs, where they played a mix of Beatles covers and original songs written by Weller and Brookes.

Paul Weller has been married three times and has eight children. His first wife was Dee C. Lee, a former backing singer for Wham! and a member of the Style Council.

They married in 1988 and had two children, Natt and Leah, before divorcing in 1994. His second wife was Samantha Stock, a make-up artist.

Career

Paul Weller’s career can be divided into three phases: the Jam, the Style Council, and his solo work.

He has collaborated with many other artists, such as Noel Gallagher, Paul McCartney, Amy Winehouse, and Gorillaz.

The Jam:

The Jam was one of the most popular and influential bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, combining the energy and attitude of punk rock with the melodies and mod aesthetics of the 1960s.

Weller was the band’s main songwriter, singer, and guitarist and wrote songs that reflected the social and political issues of the time, such as unemployment, racism, class conflict, and youth culture.

The Jam had 18 consecutive top 40 singles in the U.K., including four number ones: “Going Underground”, “Start!”, “Town Called Malice” and “Beat Surrender”.

They also released six studio albums, the most acclaimed of which are All Mod Cons (1978), Setting Sons (1979), and Sound Affects (1980).

The Jam disbanded in 1982, at the peak of their popularity, as Weller wanted to explore new musical directions.

The Style Council:

The Style Council was Weller’s next project, formed in 1983 with keyboardist Mick Talbot, formerly of the Merton Parkas.

The Style Council was a radical departure from the Jam, as they experimented with various genres, such as soul, jazz, funk, pop, and house.

Weller also adopted a more sophisticated and cosmopolitan image, wearing designer clothes and sunglasses and singing about love, politics, and social justice.

The Style Council had 19 top 40 singles in the U.K., including two number twos: “Shout to the Top” and “Walls Come Tumbling Down”.

They also released five studio albums, the most successful of which are Café Bleu (1984), Our Favourite Shop (1985), and The Cost of Loving (1987).

The Style Council disbanded in 1989 after their final album, Modernism: A New Decade was rejected by their record label.

Solo:

Weller began his solo career in 1990 with a self-titled album that marked a return to his rock and mod roots.

He gradually regained his critical and commercial success and established himself as one of the most respected and influential artists in the U.K.

He has released 16 solo albums, the most recent of which is Fat Pop (Volume 1) (2021). Some of his most acclaimed albums are Wild Wood (1993), Stanley Road (1995), 22 Dreams (2008), and Sonik Kicks (2012).

He has also had 28 top 40 singles in the U.K., including two number ones: “The Changingman” and “Peacock Suit”.

He has won four Brit Awards, including Best British Male three times and the 2006 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

He has also been nominated for the Mercury Prize four times and received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010.
