Career

Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani is a businessman best known for being president and chief operating officer of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology company.

Theranos was founded by Balwani’s then-girlfriend, Elizabeth Holmes, and was once valued at $9 billion.

However, the company was later exposed for defrauding investors and patients, and Balwani and Holmes were convicted of fraud.

Together, they raised millions of dollars in funding and gained attention from major investors and media outlets.

However, the blood test technology never worked as promised, and the company eventually faced legal and financial troubles.

In 2018, both Holmes and Balwani were charged with fraud by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Theranos raised hundreds of millions of dollars from investors, and Balwani played a key role in the company’s operations.

He oversaw the company’s product development, marketing, and sales. However, Theranos’s blood testing technology was never functional, and the company was eventually exposed to fraud.

In 2015, The Wall Street Journal published articles that exposed Theranos’s blood testing technology as fraudulent. The company’s investors and partners quickly abandoned Theranos, and the company collapsed.

In 2018, Balwani and Holmes were indicted on federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

The trial began in September 2021, and in January 2022, Balwani was found guilty on all 12 counts against him. He was sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison.

Personal Life

Balwani, 58, was in a long-term relationship with Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes.

They met in 2002 while Holmes was a student at Stanford University and Balwani was working at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson.

Their relationship ended in 2016 when Theranos’s problems came to light. There is no public information about whether Balwani has any children, and the couple’s personal lives have been overshadowed by the legal and financial consequences of Theranos’s downfall.

Net Worth

Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani’s net worth is difficult to determine precisely, but it is estimated to be millions of dollars.

However, due to his conviction and sentencing for fraud in connection with his role at Theranos, it is likely significantly lower than it once was.

Balwani’s involvement in the Theranos scandal resulted in financial loss and damaged his reputation and credibility in the business world.

Additionally, he may face future legal repercussions and penalties, further impacting his net worth.
