Controversy

In 2015, several Australian media outlets accused her of lying about her age, name, and background. They claimed that she was six years older than she claimed, that her real name was Melanie Bownds and that she did not grow up in a “ghetto”, as she had said.

She sued the publishers of Woman’s Day, Australian Women’s Weekly, NW, and OK Magazine for defamation, claiming that they had damaged her reputation and cost her roles.

She won the case in 2017 and was awarded $4.5 million in damages, later reduced to $600,000 on appeal. She donated the money to charity and the Australian film industry.

In 2019, she faced backlash for claiming she was the first plus-sized woman to star in a romantic comedy, referring to her film Isn’t It Romantic.

Many people pointed out that other actresses, such as Queen Latifah, Mo’Nique, and Melissa McCarthy, had done so before her.

She apologized for her statement and said she was proud of the film and its message of body positivity.
