Early Life & Education

Rick Ness, a familiar face on reality television, was born on March 5, 1981, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents, Richard Ness Sr. (father) and Judy Marie Bedard (mother) provided the backdrop for his upbringing.

Growing up in a family entrenched in the construction business, Ness was immersed in heavy machinery operations from an early age, often alongside his twin brother, Randy Ness. During his formative years, Ness harbored a fervor for football and music alongside his construction endeavors.

His high school journey at Escanaba Area High School saw him excelling in both fields, actively participating in football and musical pursuits. Graduating from Escanaba in 1999, Rick Ness ventured into college football, though his sports aspirations were cut short due to a head injury.

Career

After his football career ended, Rick Ness pivoted towards music, seeking solace and passion in the melodies he created. In 2003, alongside his mother, Judy Marie Bedard, he moved to Milwaukee, where he became a pivotal member of the .357 String Band, officially formed in 2004. With his adept skills on the upright bass, Rick traversed the globe, accompanying the band on their musical journey.

During their time together, the .357 String Band released three albums: Ghost Town (2006), Fire & Hail (2008), and Lightning From The North (2010). However, in 2011, the band went their separate ways, prompting Rick to seek a new adventure: gold mining in Alaska.

Rick Ness‘ path intersected with that of Gold Rush star Parker Schnabel during a music festival in 2006. While performing with his band at the Southeast Alaskan State Fair, Rick expressed interest in joining Parker‘s mining endeavors despite lacking prior experience in the field. However, his proficiency in operating heavy machinery, honed during his family’s construction business in Escanaba, served as a common ground.

Beyond Gold Rush, Rick Ness has appeared on various mining and adventure-themed television shows. Notably, he joined Parker Schnabel‘s crew in Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail from 2017 to 2018, embarking on mining expeditions in Papua New Guinea and Guyana across two seasons.
