His parents, Bill and Mamie Thomas, were US Army sergeants, and he was raised with Melissa, his older half-sister from his mother’s previous marriage. First released as a lead solo artist in 2005, “Lonely No More” was his first song. It led to his first solo album,…Something to Be (2005), which peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number six on the chart.

Robert Kelly Thomas made Matchbox Twenty’s commercially popular tracks, such as “Push,” “3 AM,” “Real World,” “Back 2 Good,” “Bent,” “If You Are Gone,” “Mad Season,” “Disease,” “Unwell,” “Bright Lights,” “How Far We Have Come,” and “She is So Mean,” were written and sung by Thomas.

In addition to recording, Thomas has credited composer work for Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Marc Anthony, Pat Green, Taylor Hicks, Travis Tritt, and Daughtry, among other musicians. Thomas received the first Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004, which honours up-and-coming songwriters who have made a significant impact on the music business.
