Growing up as the son of a railroad police officer, Piper experienced frequent moves and had to adapt to new environments, including living on Native American reservations. This constant upheaval made it difficult for him to form lasting connections, and he often felt like an outsider.

Despite these challenges, Piper found solace in learning the bagpipes at a young age and participating in amateur wrestling and boxing during his school years. These activities provided outlets for his emotions and a sense of purpose during a difficult time.
