Early Life

Sandra Mae Trentman was born in Delphos, Ohio, on October 17 1943, and later relocated to Tucson, Arizona, with her mother.

She married her mathematics teacher when she was 15, but the marriage was annulled after three years.

Scharf travelled to New York City after briefly studying pre-med at the University of Arizona and working as an assistant to an off-Broadway theatre group.

She enrolled in acting classes at the Neighborhood Playhouse after realizing that this was her genuine calling.

During a trip to California to visit her mother, a talent scout invited her to meet with their West Coast agents in Los Angeles, which launched her Hollywood career.

Personal Life

From March 29, 1969, until his death on October 10, 2017, she married Emmy Award-winning writer Bob Schiller (The Flip Wilson Show, All in the Family); they had two children together.

Career

She is most known for her performance as Sarah in the critically acclaimed 1969 picture Easy Rider, in which she co-starred with fellow Original Series guests Robert Walker and Michael Pataki.

Her other film appearances include an uncredited role in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966, co-starring Michael Strong, Phillip Pine, Vic Tayback, and George D. Wallace) and a supporting role in Hells Angels on Wheels (1967).

In addition to Star Trek, Scharf appeared as a guest star in over twenty additional television shows. She performed in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.U.N.C.L.E. and The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.U.N.C.L.E. in 1966, with the latter directed by Jud Taylor.

She then collaborated on a Daniel Boone episode with Jeffrey Hunter, featured in Star Trek’s first pilot, “The Cage.”

China Hazard, the daughter of Nehemiah Persoff‘s Major Hazard, was played by Scharf in the 1968 episode “The Night of the Underground Terror” of The Wild Wild West.

In this episode, Jeff Corey appeared as a colonel serving under Persoff’s character. That same year, Scharf co-starred alongside Robert Brown and Ricardo Montalban in an episode of The Danny Thomas Hour.

Scharf later appeared on television shows such as I Dream of Jeannie (with Bill Quinn), Hogan’s Heroes (two episodes, one directed by Marc Daniels and co-starring Barbara Babcock), Gunsmoke, Mannix (two episodes: one with Richard Derr and Jill Ireland, the other with Charles Dierkop), The Interns (directed by Marvin Chomsky), Banacek (with George Murdock), and The Streets of San Francisco (again with Bill Quinn).

She also appeared in three episodes of Hawaii Five-O, including a two-parter with Roger C. Carmel. All three of these episodes were directed by Michael O’Herlihy, who also directed Scharf in a 1973 episode of The New Perry Mason starring Byron Morrow and Kenneth Tobey.

She appeared in one made-for-television film, the 1973 C.B.S.C.B.S. thriller Hunter. Her fellow Star Trek alumni Bill Erwin, Steve Ihnat, John Schuck, Fritz Weaver, and Jason Wingreen also appeared in this film.

In 1975, Scharf appeared in two episodes of the sitcom Harry O, which also featured Anthony Zerbe from Star Trek: Insurgency. Her first episode was directed by John Newland, while her second starred Original Series guest star John Colicos.

She became an anti-pollution crusader before retiring from acting in the mid-1970s. In 1972, she ran an almost successful campaign to become California’s first female State Senator, losing only 700 votes out of over 250,000 cast.

That encounter inspired several episodes of the hit sitcom Maude’s fourth season, thanks to her screenwriter husband. She became an attorney in 1989, and, as of 2007, she was a real estate developer in Los Angeles.
