Controversy

Sam Ke Ting’s case was one of Malaysia’s most controversial and widely discussed.

She was accused of causing the death of eight teenagers who were riding modified bicycles, also known as basikal lajak, on a dimly lit road in Johor Bahru in 2017.

She claimed she saw them when it was too late to avoid them and was driving within the speed limit. She was initially acquitted by the Magistrate Court in 2019 but later convicted by the High Court in 2022 and sentenced to six years in jail and a fine of RM6,000.

She appealed to the Court of Appeal, which overturned the conviction and freed her in 2023.

Sam Ke Ting received public sympathy and support, especially on social media, where many people argued that she was a victim of injustice and that the teenagers were responsible for their deaths.

Some prominent lawyers, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak‘s lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, offered to represent her pro bono. Several petitions were also launched to call for her release.

Sam Ke Ting’s case also raised awareness and concern over the issue of illegal bicycle racing and road safety in Malaysia.

The basikal lajak phenomenon, which involves modifying bicycles with short handlebars, plastic wheels, and no brakes and racing downhill against the traffic flow, has been blamed for causing accidents, injuries, and deaths.

The authorities have taken measures to crack down on the activity and to educate the public about the dangers and consequences.
