Samuel grew up in a poor and multicultural neighborhood, where he developed his interest in literature, cinema, and music. He attended a local school but dropped out at 15 to pursue his artistic career.

Their marriage was happy and harmonious until a tragic event occurred in 2003. Marie was killed by her secret lover, Bertrand Cantat, the lead singer of the rock band Noir Désir, who beat her to death in a hotel room in Vilnius, Lithuania. Samuel was devastated by the loss of his wife and wrote a book, Le Cœur en dehors, in 2005 as a tribute to her.

He also raised his son, Jules, who followed in his parent’s footsteps and became an actor. Samuel’s second wife is Vanessa Paradis, a famous French singer and actress and the ex-partner of American actor Johnny Depp.

They met in 2016 on the set of the film Chien, which Samuel directed and Vanessa starred in. They fell in love and married in 2018 in a small ceremony in Saint-Siméon, France.

They have a son, Saül, born in 2005, from Samuel’s previous relationship with actress Anna Mouglalis. Samuel and Vanessa are still happily married and live in Paris.
