A popular church, HICC, headed by Pastor B, has stirred controversy by inviting the singer Spyro to perform during a program in Lagos. The move has ignited a wave of reactions on social media, particularly on Twitter, where diverse opinions have been voiced.

One Twitter user expressed disbelief, stating, “Can’t believe people are really defending Spyro singing ‘Only fine girl’ in church.” This sentiment was echoed by others who questioned the appropriateness of inviting a secular artist to perform in a religious setting.

Critics argue that such events blur the lines between the sacred and the secular, with one Twitter user asserting, “I have always said that the Church as a religious establishment is nothing more than a business venture.” The sentiment continued with a comparison to other instances where secular musicians like Wasiu Alabi Pasuma and Portable were invited to church events, prompting questions about the distinction between religious gatherings and regular concerts.

The controversy took a turn when some defended the church, pointing out that Spyro is an active member of Harvesters church and serves in the creative unit. This led to a debate about whether the inclusion of celebrities in church activities should be condemned or accepted, with some suggesting that critics should wait until these celebrities are no longer active members.

The debate extended to discussions about the appropriateness of secular performers participating in religious-themed events. Including popular secular actors in acting out a Bible story during a church event drew attention, sparking a broader conversation about the evolving nature of religious practices and the interpretation of religious norms.

Amid the criticisms, some defended the context of the performance, highlighting that it was part of a stage play or musical depicting a biblical narrative. The explanation suggests that the performance was not intended as a standalone musical act but as a contribution to a larger storytelling experience.
