Early Life & Education

Sonny John Moore, also known as Skrillex, has an intriguing backstory that began with his adoption at birth by family friends of his biological parents. He learned about this at age 15, which likely added a layer of complexity to his already complex identity. Born on January 12, 1988, in the Highland Park neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles, he grew up in the Forest Hill neighborhood of San Francisco after his family relocated there when he was two.

Interestingly, his mother, Francis Moore, works in business, while his father, Scott Moore, is an entrepreneur. Skrillex attended elementary school until the age of 9 or 10 before being sent to boarding school in the Mojave Desert. However, he left the program at 14 due to bullying and later homeschooled himself, eventually dropping out of the program at the age of 16.

Skrillex found solace in the music scene in his teenage years, attending punk gigs in Mexican American neighborhoods in East and South Los Angeles. Here, he discovered his passion for music and later found his way into electro club raves in the downtown areas of Silver Lake and Echo Park. This unique blend of experiences likely contributed to Skrillex‘s distinct sound and creative vision.

Personal Life

Skrillex, the multi-talented music producer, and DJ, has had a fair share of romantic relationships. He was linked with British pop star Ellie Goulding in 2012, which he only revealed in an interview three years later. Apart from Ellie Goulding, Skrillex has also been in relationships with several other women, including Kai, Charmaine Olivia, and Emily Gauthreaux.

Despite his parents’ affiliation with the Church of Scientology, Skrillex never expressed any interest in the religion, instead focusing on his music career. He often credits music as his main source of spiritual fulfillment and creative expression.

However, Skrillex has also faced difficult times in his personal life, including the untimely death of his mother, Francis Moore, in June 2015. Her passing profoundly impacted him and his family; he has since taken time to reflect on her life and legacy.

Career

In the early 2000s, Skrillex‘s career trajectory took an unexpected turn when he was approached by Matt Good of From First to Last. The band had just signed to Epitaph Records and sought a lead guitarist to record their debut album. He accepted the offer and traveled to Georgia to join the group. There, three producers – Derrick Thomas, Eric Dale, and McHale Butler – noticed his impressive singing chops and offered him the role of lead vocalist instead, with him taking over on guitar.

Thus began Skrillex‘s stint with From First to Last, which resulted in the release of their debut album Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count in 2004. The album was a commercial success and spawned several hit singles, including Note to Self and Ride the Wings of Pestilence. The band embarked on several successful tours, including the Vans Warped Tour and Dead by Dawn tour, and recorded their follow-up album Heroine with producer Ross Robinson, which was released in March 2006.

However, vocal issues caused Skrillex to leave the band’s tour commitments. He underwent a successful surgical procedure but ultimately decided to leave From First to Last to pursue a solo career in music. His final show with the band was in their hometown of Orlando at The House of Blues while they were touring with Atreyu.

In 2008, Skrillex was featured in the second annual AP Tour, including All Time Low, The Rocket Summer, The Matches, and Forever the Sickest Kids. The tour was a huge success, and all the bands performing were featured on the cover of Alternative Press Magazine’s 100 Bands You Need to Know special. During the tour, he released a digital EP called Gypsyhook, which included three songs and four remixes.

Skrillex‘s solo career continued gaining traction, and in 2013, he announced that he would release a new LP in the summer. Over the years, he has collaborated with various artists and groups, including K-pop girl group 4Minute, with whom he composed and arranged their first track, Hate. He also reunited with From First to Last, releasing tracks like Make War and Surrender with the band.
