Early Life

SuperM is a boy group composed of members previously belonging to distinguished boy groups under SM Entertainment. Taemin, who entered the entertainment industry at the tender age of 14, debuted as a member of Shinee in May 2008. Meanwhile, Baekhyun and Kai debuted as part of Exo in April 2012, specifically in Exo-K, the Korean sub-unit. Furthermore, Baekhyun showcased his talents in Exo’s R&B-oriented sub-unit, Exo-CBX, starting in October 2016.

NCT members Taeyong, Ten, and Mark debuted in April 2016, with Taeyong and Mark joining NCT 127, the Seoul-based sub-unit, in July 2016. Mark also joined NCT Dream, the teenage sub-unit, in August 2016. In contrast, Ten and Lucas joined WayV, the China-based sub-unit of NCT, in January 2019.

Before SuperM‘s official debut in 2019, rumors circulated about SM Entertainment‘s intentions to create a “K-pop Super Boy Band.” Eventually, on August 7, 2019, the group was formally introduced as SuperM during Capitol Congress 2019 by Capitol Music Group chairman Steve Barnett and SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man.

Career

SuperM, the brainchild of SM Entertainment in 2019, stands as a formidable K-pop supergroup comprising seven members drawn from various illustrious K-pop groups. Its lineup features Taemin from SHINee, Baekhyun and Kai from EXO, Taeyong and Mark from NCT 127, and Lucas and Ten from WayV. The primary objective behind SuperM‘s formation is to spearhead the promotion of K-pop on a global scale, focusing on penetrating the American market.

Debuting on October 4, 2019, with their mini-album “SuperM” and lead single Jopping, SuperM achieved a groundbreaking milestone by clinching the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 chart, a first for any K-pop group. Following this triumph, they embarked on their inaugural world tour, SuperM – The 1st World Tour, in November 2019.

In September 2020, the release of their highly anticipated second mini-album, Super One, propelled them to the number two position on the prestigious Billboard 200 chart, solidifying their status as the top-selling K-pop album in the United States for 2020. Capitalizing on this success, they unveiled their debut full-length album, Super One – The 1st Album, just a month later, in October 2020.

However, SuperM, a convergence of talents from distinct K-pop groups, faced challenges from scheduling conflicts among its members’ primary affiliations. Consequently, in 2021, the group paused the release of new music and only arranged a limited number of online concerts. Moreover, the group encountered another setback in 2022 when member Lucas took a hiatus due to personal controversies, leading to speculations about the group’s future and its ability to maintain cohesion and momentum.
