In the world of video production, capturing high-quality audio is just as important as recording clear visuals. When enhancing the audio quality of your camera recordings, a clip-on microphone, also known as a lavalier or lapel microphone, can be a game-changer. In this guide, we will walk you through selecting a clip on microphone for the camera and provide useful tips for effectively using it to capture professional-grade audio.

What is a Clip on Microphone for Video Camera?

A clip-on microphone is a small, discreet microphone that can be easily attached to clothing or directly onto the camera. Its compact size and convenience make it ideal for capturing audio while keeping your hands free during recording.

Advantages of Clip-On Microphones

• Enhanced audio quality: Clip-on microphones provide superior audio compared to built-in camera mics, capturing clearer and more focused sound.
• Noise reduction: Clip-on microphones minimise ambient noise and background distractions by positioning the microphone close to the sound source.
• Mobility and versatility: They offer flexibility and ease of use, allowing you to move freely while recording, making them suitable for various applications.

Choosing the Right Clip-On Microphone for Camera

Consider the following factors when selecting a clip on microphone for the camera:

• Wired vs. Wireless: Decide whether you need a wired or wireless clip on camera microphone. Wired microphones offer reliable connectivity but restrict mobility, while wireless options provide freedom of movement but require batteries and may be prone to interference.
• Compatibility: Ensure your chosen microphone is compatible with your camera’s audio input. Some cameras have 3.5mm jacks, while others may require an adapter or have proprietary connectors.
• Frequency Response: Look for a microphone with a wide frequency response range (usually 20Hz to 20kHz) to accurately capture a broad spectrum of sounds.
• Directionality: Consider the pickup pattern. Omni-directional microphones capture sound from all directions, while directional options focus on sound coming from a specific direction, reducing background noise.
• Build Quality and Durability: Opt for a well-built microphone that withstands regular use and shooting conditions.

Tips for Using Lapel Microphones with Cameras

• Proper Placement: Attach the microphone to the subject’s clothing, preferably near the chest area, to capture clear, natural-sounding audio.
• Minimize Cable Noise: Use cable clips or adhesive tape to secure the microphone cable along the subject’s clothing, reducing the chances of cable movement noise.
• Test and Monitor: Conduct a quick audio test before recording to ensure proper microphone functionality and audio levels. Monitor the audio using headphones to catch any issues during recording.
• Wind Protection: When recording outdoors, consider using a foam or furry windscreen to minimize wind noise and improve audio quality.
• Battery Management: If using a wireless clip-on microphone, always carry spare batteries or ensure the microphone is fully charged to avoid interruptions during shoots.
• Adjust Audio Levels: Check and adjust the audio levels on your camera to prevent distortion or clipping. Aim for an optimal signal-to-noise ratio.
• Post-Processing: To enhance the audio further, consider using audio editing software to remove background noise, equalize the sound, and make any necessary adjustments.

Conclusion

Investing in a clip on microphone for the camera can significantly elevate the audio quality of your recordings, making them more professional and engaging. By considering factors such as wired or wireless options, compatibility, frequency response, and build quality, you can choose the right microphone to suit your needs. Additionally, following the tips for using clip-on microphones with cameras will help you achieve the best possible audio results. With the right microphone and proper techniques, you’ll be well on your way to capturing crystal-clear audio for your video productions.
