Career

Absa Faye is recognized as the spouse of Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal’s newly elected president. While details about her professional life are limited, her husband, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, holds a prominent position in Senegalese politics. Formerly a tax inspector and the president of the banned political party PASTEF, he emerged victorious in the 2024 Senegalese presidential election after disqualified candidate Ousmane Sonko. Absa and Diomaye form a formidable couple within Senegal’s political sphere.

The country was engulfed in tension and controversy as the Senegalese presidential election drew near. On January 20, 2024, the Senegalese Constitutional Council released the final list of candidates, omitting Ousmane Sonko, a popular political figure, after numerous legal battles. Despite being detained, Macky Sall‘s candidacy was upheld due to lack of conviction. Sonko, previously viewed as a frontrunner for the presidency, swiftly threw his support behind Faye‘s opponent, adding to the election’s uncertainty.

Affectionately dubbed “the honorable one,” Diomaye secured victory in the March 24 presidential election with an impressive 54.3 per cent of the vote just ten days after his release. His anti-establishment stance, bolstered by support from opposition figurehead Ousmane Sonko and his humble demeanour, was pivotal in his landslide triumph over the ruling coalition’s candidate.
