Early Life & Education

Obesere, the renowned Fuji musician from Nigeria, was born on January 20, 1965, in Ibadan, Oyo State. While his early life was shaped by the influence of his parents, Obesere has chosen to maintain privacy regarding details about them. Notably, Fatai Akanbi Iyanda is identified as one of Obesere‘s siblings, highlighting the familial bonds in his life.

Born into the Ajalaruru family of Ibadan, Obesere‘s parents, despite not adhering to the Yoruba traditional religion, named him after Prophet Muhammad’s uncle, choosing “Abass” for him. His father, Alhaji Lasisi Ajalaruru, was a government contractor and politician in the politically charged atmosphere of Western Region politics in Ibadan. With five wives and seventeen children, including six from his third wife, Alhaja Taibat, the family dynamic was intricate.

Despite his potential predestination in the performing arts, akin to the masquerades of ancient Ibadan or his accomplished musician uncle Alhaji Tatalo Alamu, Obesere‘s parents did not explore his akọsẹ̀ jayé, the act of consulting the oracle for insights into a child’s destiny. Instead, he received his enduring nickname, “ọmọ rápálá,” during his time at St. Paul Primary School, Ebute-Meta.

In secondary school at Jubril Martins Secondary School (later Iponri Grammar School), Obesere, not academically inclined, compensated with native intelligence and a hustler’s spirit. Apprenticing in printing, he balanced school and work, often avoiding errands to indulge in makeshift boxing gyms. While not mastering the printing trade, his experiences as an errand boy laid the foundation for his future journey in the music industry.

Career

During childhood, Obesere‘s passion for music ignited as he enthusiastically lent his vocals to musical performances at church and various local gatherings. In the thriving era of the early 1990s, Obesere unveiled his inaugural studio album, the remarkable Egungun Be Careful. This noteworthy release not only garnered substantial commercial triumph but also played a pivotal role in propelling Obesere toward an extraordinary career trajectory in Fuji music.

Since he started his career, Obesere has produced more than 20 albums and has gained immense popularity as a Fuji musician in Nigeria. Notably, his music is characterized by controversial lyrics that often delve into taboo subjects. Despite the contentious nature of his songs, Obesere‘s fan base remains unwavering in their adoration for his music due to its unparalleled vigor and exhilaration.

In addition to his successful music career, Abass Akande Obesere has also ventured into acting, starring in several films. Some notable ones include Ito Urine, released in 2008, and Iyawo Otunba, released in 2010. Not content with excelling in the entertainment industry, Obesere has succeeded as a businessman. With interests in both real estate and the entertainment sector, he has proven his versatility and ability to thrive in multiple fields.
