Career

He secured a seat in Parliament representing the Eldoret North constituency, a position he successfully retained in the 2002 elections. Using his parliamentary role, Ruto championed youth causes and rallied support for President Daniel arap Moi‘s reelection, pivotal in forming the Youth for KANU 1992 group.

However, his political trajectory faced a setback in 2010 when he faced suspension from his ministerial position over corruption allegations. Undeterred, Ruto aligned himself with the newly established United Republican Party (URP) and clinched the Deputy Presidency in 2013 alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta following their victory in the general elections. Despite grappling with legal proceedings at the International Criminal Court for his alleged role in the 2007-2008 post-election unrest, Ruto retained his influential status in Kenyan politics.

Throughout his career, William Ruto demonstrated political acumen and adaptability. He transitioned to various ministerial roles, including Minister of Higher Education, before making history as Kenya’s inaugural Deputy President. Additionally, he founded the United Republican Party (URP) and spearheaded the formation of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, showcasing his adeptness at forging strategic alliances for political gain.

William Ruto‘s astute leadership and strategic manoeuvres culminated in his reelection in 2017 and his landmark victory in the fiercely contested 2022 presidential polls, propelling him to the presidency as Kenya’s 5th head of state.
