Her mother is also a politician and a former member of the Lok Sabha. Her elder brother, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is the founder and president of the YSR Congress Party and the current Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister.

Sharmila grew up in a political family and was exposed to public life from a young age. She completed her schooling at Hyderabad Public School and later graduated from St. Mary’s College in Hyderabad.

Personal Life

Y.S. Sharmila married Anil Kumar, a businessman and a Christian evangelist, in 1996. The couple has two children: a son named Raja and a daughter named Anjali.

Sharmila converted to Christianity after marriage and is actively involved in her husband’s ministry. She is also a fitness enthusiast and practices yoga and meditation regularly.

Career

Y.S. Sharmila entered politics in 2012 when her brother, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for corruption and disproportionate assets.

She was responsible for campaigning for the YSR Congress Party, founded by her brother in 2011, along with her mother, Y.S. Vijayamma.

She worked as the party’s national convener and addressed several public meetings and rallies across Andhra Pradesh.

She also undertook a 3,000 km-long walkathon called ‘Maro Praja Prasthanam’ (Another People’s Journey) from October 2012 to August 2013 to highlight the welfare schemes and achievements of her father’s government and to expose the failures and corruption of the then-ruling Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

During her walkathon, she covered 14 districts and 141 assembly constituencies and received a huge response from the people.

She also participated in another 11-day bus yatra, called ‘Praja Theerpu – Bye Bye Babu’ (People’s Verdict – Bye Bye Babu), in 2019 to campaign against the then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his TDP government.

In 2021, Y.S. Sharmila announced that she would launch a new political party in Telangana, as she felt that there was no presence of the YSR Congress Party in the state and that there was a need for an alternative to the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government.

She also claimed that she had political differences with her brother, who was focused on Andhra Pradesh.

She said that she wanted to carry forward the legacy of her father, who was popular in Telangana for his pro-people policies and schemes. She launched the YSR Telangana Party on July 8, 2021, which was her father’s birth anniversary.

She also started a padayatra, called ‘Praja Prasthanam’ (People’s Journey), in October 2022 to interact with Telangana and raise their issues.

However, her party failed to make an impact in the Telangana Assembly election held in November 2023 and did not win any seats.

In January 2024, Y.S. Sharmila joined the Indian National Congress, her father’s party, and merged her YSR Telangana Party with it.

She said it was her father’s dream to see Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Minister of India and that she would work towards fulfilling it. She also said that the Congress was the country’s biggest secular party and had built the nation’s foundation.

She was appointed president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, aiming to revive the party’s fortunes in the state and reclaim her father’s legacy.

She is expected to lead the party’s campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and to challenge her brother’s YSR Congress Party.

Death

Y.S. Sharmila is alive and well as of 2024. She has not faced any serious health issues or accidents in her life.

However, her political opponents and rivals have faced threats and attacks. In November 2022, she was allegedly attacked by the workers of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party during her padayatra in Warangal district.

She was also detained by the police for protesting against the BRS government. She has also filed a complaint against the social media IT cell of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for spreading rumors about her having an illicit relationship with actor Prabhas.

Controversy

Y.S. Sharmila has been involved in several political controversies in her political career. Some of them are:

In 2019, she registered a complaint with the Commissioner of Hyderabad, CP Anjani Kumar, against the social media IT cell of Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

She complained that TDP’s IT cell was spreading a hoax about her illicit relationship with the Bahubali fame actor Prabhas.

She said they had spread the rumors before the 2014 elections and stopped them after the elections but started them again in 2019.

She denied having any relation with Prabhas and said it was a malicious campaign to defame her and her family.

In 2021, she announced the launching of a new political party in Telangana. This surprised many people, as her brother, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the president of the YSR Congress Party.

She said that she had political differences with her brother and that there was no presence of the YSR Congress Party in Telangana.

She also said that she wanted to carry forward her father’s legacy, who was popular in Telangana for his pro-people policies and schemes.

She faced criticism and opposition from the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government and its supporters, who accused her of trying to divide Telangana’s people and having no stake or contribution in the state’s development.

In 2024, she joined the Indian National Congress, her father’s party, and merged her YSR Telangana Party with it.

She faced backlash and resentment from some of the existing leaders and workers of the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh, who felt that she was an outsider and a parachute leader.

They also questioned her loyalty and credibility, as she had left the Congress party in 2011 and had formed a rival party in Telangana in 2021.
