Unfortunately, Yola’s passion for music was met with resistance from her family, who believed that pursuing a music career was an unattainable dream. Furthermore, Yola’s father left her and her mother as toddlers, leaving them to navigate life as a single-parent household.

Despite their challenges due to financial constraints, Yola’s mother remained steadfast in her opposition to Yola’s aspirations of becoming a singer.

Education

After attending grammar school, Yola experienced newfound independence and embarked on a journey to explore her passion for music. Determined to follow her dreams, she enrolled in a university in London, relying on her student loan as a means of sustenance while simultaneously nurturing her musical talent.

However, unforeseen circumstances led Yola down an unplanned trajectory as she faced the disheartening reality of being a university dropout and ultimately encountering eviction due to her inability to meet the financial demands of her rent.

Career

Yola’s career began as a backing singer and sometimes songwriter for well-known British bands such as Sub Focus, Massive Attack, Bugz in the Attic, Ginger Wildheart, and Duke Dumont. Her musical career began when she joined the prestigious Bristol band Phantom Limb in 2005.

Yola was instrumental in making two hit albums that displayed her enormous talent and versatility throughout her time with them.

Yola debuted as a solo artist in 2016 with the release of her EP Orphan Offering. This musical venture received widespread acclaim from critics, opening the road for her to be signed to Dan Auerbach’s prestigious Easy Eye Sound label.

Building on her early popularity, Yola released her first full-length album, Walk Through Fire, in 2019, with Auerbach serving as producer. The album gained critical and fan acclaim and achieved exceptional commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
