Early Life and Education

Yunho was born and raised in Gwangju, South Korea, on February 6, 1986. He has one younger sister. Several members of Yunho’s family worked in the legal industry, and Yunho’s childhood dream was to be a prosecutor.

However, he also had a passion for music and dance and formed a dance team called A+ with his friends in middle school. They competed in various dance competitions around the country.

He auditioned for SM Entertainment in 1999 and became the company’s first official trainee. His family, who suffered greatly from the 1997 Asian financial crisis, were initially against his decision to become a singer.

To support himself while he trained in Seoul, Yunho took up various part-time jobs, such as doing snow removal and working as a waiter. He spent most of his high school vacations in Seoul training and only returned to Gwangju for school.

Sometime later, Yunho suffered a hormonal imbalance in his throat and underwent surgery, which affected his vocal cords.

He lost his voice and considered giving up his training. However, he persevered and recovered his voice. He was put in four temporary groups during his trainee years, all later disbanded.

He finally debuted as a member of TVXQ in 2003, along with Kim Jae-joong, Park Yoo-chun, Kim Junsu, and Shim Chang-min. He graduated from Myongji University and Chungwoon University, majoring in postmodern music and film and musical studies.

Personal Life

Yunho is not married and has no children. He has kept his personal life private and has not revealed any details about his romantic relationships.

He is close friends with his fellow TVXQ member Changmin and other celebrities such as BoA, Super Junior’s Heechul and Eunhyuk, and SHINee’s Minho.

They have also set several records, such as being the first foreign artist to hold a five-dome tour in Japan and being the first non-Japanese Asian artist to headline the Nissan Stadium.

In 2009, three members of TVXQ, Jae-joong, Yoo-chun, and Junsu, filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, claiming that their contract was unfair and excessively long.

They left the company and formed a new group called JYJ. Yunho and Changmin decided to stay with SM Entertainment and continued to promote TVXQ as a duo.
